Republique, to the north of Marais and Bastille, is an area that combines a working class atmosphere with fashionable boutiques. Republique Plaza itself may feel noisy and crowded with people, but very nearby there is the Saint-Martin Canal where you can take your family to see the beautiful scenery of old Paris spread out before you. Found at the base of the Eiffel Tower, this is the well-known 7th ward, another exclusive residential area. From the Saint-Paul Station on the metro, Place des Vosges spreads out into Marais with its Jewish area (were you can buy delicious falafel) and many upscale boutiques. The Latin Quarter is famous for being a college town where the buildings of Paris's universities, which all began with the Sorbonne, stretch out before you. The symbol of this area is, of course, the building dedicated to the great men of France, the Pantheon. Since this is a college area, there are plenty of restaurants and cafes and it is always busy. Yet it is also the oldest part of Paris, with remnants of history from the Roman period still left, so if you head down some of the small paths and alleys you’ll see aspects of the Middle-Ages that still exist.
